Museums and cultural institutions were among the hardest hit by the pandemic due to closures resulting in a reduction in the main source of income, namely visits.
A large-scale study of European museums by NEMO, the network of European museum organisations, tried to define the boundaries of this phenomenon. About 70% of European museums were forced to close for a long period of time. Even during the opening periods they experienced a reduction in visitors of between 25% and 75%. The economic damage is considerable and is estimated at between 1,000 and 30,000 euros per week, depending of course on the size of the museums.
