#ilPOLIMIrisponde – Digital technologies and museums

Davide Spallazzo, Interaction Design teacher, responds.

Museums and cultural institutions were among the hardest hit by the pandemic due to closures resulting in a reduction in the main source of income, namely visits.

A large-scale study of European museums by NEMO, the network of European museum organisations, tried to define the boundaries of this phenomenon. About 70% of European museums were forced to close for a long period of time. Even during the opening periods they experienced a reduction in visitors of between 25% and 75%. The economic damage is considerable and is estimated at between 1,000 and 30,000 euros per week, depending of course on the size of the museums.

The question in this episode of #ilPOLIMIrisponde is: can digital technologies help museums overcome the current pandemic crisis?

Davide Spallazzo, Professor of Interaction Design, answers
